Ganesh Moorthy, accused of illegally transporting 25 tonnes of subsidised Bharat Urea meant for farmers to Kerala for profit, has been detained under the Goondas Act in Coimbatore. On August 28, his vehicle was intercepted at Madukkarai RTO checkpost upon instructions from Pollachi Civil Supplies CID (CSCID).
Coimbatore: A man accused of illegally diverting subsidised Bharat Urea meant for farmers in Tamil Nadu to Kerala for profit has been detained under the Goondas Act in Coimbatore.
According to the Coimbatore Civil Supplies CID (CSCID) police, a vehicle inspection was conducted near the Madukkarai RTO checkpost on the Coimbatore–Palakkad Road on August 28, 2026. An Ashok Leyland Taurus lorry bearing registration number TN 32 AH 9612 was intercepted while allegedly transporting around 25 tonnes of subsidised Bharat Urea.
The police said the consignment was being transported by fertiliser traders Ganesh Moorthy, a resident of Vadallur in Cuddalore district, and his brother Senthilkumar. The fertiliser was allegedly loaded near the Virudhachalam tollgate on the Virudhachalam–Jayankondam Main Road and was being transported for sale in Kerala through an intermediary, with the assistance of Mohammed Basil of Alappuzha district and the manager of Perumbavur Plywood Manufacturers Consortium Pvt. Ltd. in Angamaly, Kerala.
Based on the complaint, the Pollachi CSCID unit registered a case. Manikandan and Poongavanam were arrested on August 28, while Ganesh Moorthy, Senthilkumar and Mohammed Basil were arrested on August 29 and remanded in judicial custody.
The police said Ganesh Moorthy had repeatedly purchased Bharat Urea supplied to farmers at subsidised prices and sold it to a company in Perumbavur, Kerala, at a higher profit, allegedly undermining the Government’s scheme.
Based on a recommendation by Pollachi CSCID Inspector L. Muruganantham, Coimbatore District Collector Pavan Kumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, ordered Ganesh Moorthy’s detention under the Goondas Act on September 14, 2026. The preventive detention order was subsequently served on him at Coimbatore Central Prison, where he is currently lodged.
The District Collector warned that anyone involved in transporting subsidised Bharat Urea meant for farmers would face action under the Goondas Act, irrespective of their identity.
