A review meeting chaired by Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampathkumar was held in Coimbatore to assess road repair works, stormwater drainage maintenance and Northeast monsoon preparedness. The District Collector, Corporation Commissioner and Singanallur MLA, among other officials, attended the meeting.
Coimbatore: With the Northeast monsoon approaching, a review meeting was held in the city to assess road repair works, waterlogging prevention measures, stormwater drain clearance and other preparedness activities.
The meeting was chaired by Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampathkumar at the R.S. Puram Corporation Kalaiarangam. District Collector Pavan Kumar Giriyappanavar, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja and Singanallur MLA K.S. Sre Giri Prasad, along with officials from various departments, attended the meeting.
The discussions focused on monsoon preparedness across Coimbatore district and the Corporation limits, including road repairs, stormwater drainage maintenance, emergency response arrangements and disease prevention measures.
Monsoon Preparedness
Officials were directed to identify rain-damaged major roads, link roads and high-traffic stretches and undertake repairs on a priority basis. Immediate patchwork was advised for potholes and damaged road sections.
The minister instructed officials to install barricades, reflective warning signs and night-time safety lights at roadwork sites to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
Officials were also asked to inspect the slopes of newly constructed roads and verify whether their stormwater drainage connections were functioning properly. Roads dug up for drinking water, sewage and electricity works should be restored to proper standards after the completion of the respective projects.
Officials were directed to identify low-lying areas, underpasses, major junctions and roads vulnerable to waterlogging. Stormwater drains, culverts and inlets should be cleared of garbage and silt to ensure the uninterrupted flow of rainwater.
The meeting also discussed trimming tree branches vulnerable to breaking and taking precautionary measures near old trees that could be uprooted during heavy rains.
TANGEDCO officials were instructed to remain prepared with essential equipment and personnel to handle rain-related emergencies. Night-time monitoring during the monsoon season was also emphasised.
The Corporation and traffic police were asked to identify congestion-prone junctions and locations requiring traffic diversions, particularly near schools, hospitals, bus stands, markets and other busy public areas.
Highways Department officials were directed to inspect drainage facilities along state and national highways and take preventive measures in waterlogging-prone locations.
The minister called for coordinated action among the Corporation, Revenue Department, Highways Department, Police, Fire and Rescue Services, TANGEDCO and other departments during emergencies. He also instructed officials to address public complaints promptly and resolve critical issues on a priority basis.
