AMMK fields veteran N.R. Appadurai in Coimbatore

The 67-year-old Appadurai who is contesting in Coimbatore for the first time, will be facing a tough opposition from the candidates from CPI (M) and BJP who have already been selected from the constituency in the past.

Coimbatore: Introducing a new face to the Coimbatore Constituency in the upcoming general elections, TTV Dhinakaran led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) has fielded veteran party leader N.R. Appadurai against P.R. Natarajan from CPI and presumably C.P.Radhakrishnan from BJP.

The party has released the names of the candidates for 24 lok sabha constituencies and nine assembly constituencies today.

The 67-year-old Appadurai who is contesting in Coimbatore for the first time, will be facing a tough opposition from the candidates from CPI (M) and BJP who have already been selected from the constituency in the past.

Appadurai had stood in the general elections in Kinakuthukidavu constituency and came second  in 1989 contesting for former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s faction.

Hailing from Sadayakoundanpudhur in Pollachi, Appadurai has a Bachelor’s degree.

His former political life has largely circulated around Pollachi since joining the party in 1972, where he has had several posts including Union Secretary, District Joint Secretary and District Secretary.

He also served as the Chairman of Aavin between 1992 and 1996.

He is currently the Organising Secretary of AMMK.

Meanwhile, S.R. Selvam District Secretary of Urban Erode has been nominated as the candidate for Pollachi who will have a direct fight with DMK and S. Muthukumar District Secretary of Puratchithalaivi Amma Peravai has been fielded in the Tirupur constituency and will face the CPI candidate Subburayan. The AIADMK has not announced the candidate list yet.

It maybe noted that while all other parties followed the general procedure of inviting nominations before selection, no such procedures were followed by AMMK for candidate selection.

The party however, is expected focus more on the by elections in the 18 assembly constituencies to try and upset the ruling AIADMK.
