Farmers of Non-affiliated Farmers Union have demanded that they (farmers) should be exempted from paying tolls for using the highways when they are transporting their produce to and from vegetable markets. They also stated that toll fee should not be collected from farmers who live within a radius of 20-kms from the toll gates.
Farmers of Non-affiliated Farmers Union submitted a petition to the Coimbatore collector in this regard. In their petition the farmers have stated that the IVRCL company is collecting a toll fee at Kaniyur despite the incompletion of work from the Madukkarai to Walayar stretch of the highway. Collection of toll charges at Kaniyur-Chengampalli stretch and Madukkarai Walayar stretch by IVRCL without completing construction of the highway is illegal. Also the petitioners have requested that the money collected as toll fee after the expiration of the contract period should be handed over to the government.
