In a massive encroachment drive headed by the Director of Rural Development Program, 42 cents of land including a building worth Rs.8.40 crores encroached by Abirami Nursing College has been retrieved.
Coimbatore: Around 42-cent of land worth Rs.8.40 crore encroached by a private nursing college in Seerapalayam village of Madukkarai Town panchayat in Coimbatore has been retrieved by the officials, on Tuesday.
According to reports, Abirami Nursing College located near Seerapalayam here had encroached 42 cents of land belonging to the Madukkarai Town Panchayat. Upon instructions by Coimbatore district administration to identify encroached government lands in the district and retrieve them, a team of officials led by Director of Rural Development Program, commenced the retrieval process of the 42 cents of land encroached by the private college.

Despite notices served to the hospital administration to vacate the encroached premises, the administration allegedly did not pay heed to the officials.

Hence, the officials today in the presence of the Panchayat President, Councillor, headed by the Director of Rural Development Program recovered the encroached land.
A building which was built in the retrieved land was also taken into possession. Besides seizing the building, the Project Director has instructed to use the building to set up a food preparation centre with the participation of women's self-help groups.
"A few other private colleges, hostels and industries in and around the area have not been paying taxes to the Panchayat promptly. Hence, the next task would be to collect pending taxes from those institutions and establishments", the officials noted.
The swift and stringent action by officials by retrieving 42 cents of government land has attracted the appreciation of social activists and villagers.
