Special cell formed in Collectorate to inquire complaints against VAOs

The order further noted that VAOs absenting themselves should have obtained prior permission from the concerned Tahsildar.

Coimbatore: District Collector, K. Rajamani on Thursday announced that a special cell has been formed in the Collectorate premise to receive grievances against VAOs.

The action comes after the orders of Madurai bench of Madras High Court, directing all district collectors to constitute a special grievance cell comprising of an official in the rank of a revenue divisional officer and two tahsildars to inquire and take action on complaints regarding village administrative officers (VAO).

"There are 292 VAOs in the Coimbatore district which comprises of two revenue blocks and ten taluks -  Annur, Anamalai, Coimbatore North taluk, Coimbatore South taluk, Kinathukkadavu, Madukkarai, Mettupalayam, Perur, Pollachi, Sulur and Valparai. People can now file their grievances against VAOs at this newly formed cell functioning at the Collectorate", noted Collector.

Recently, a petition was filed by A. Selvagurunathan, a farmer from Thanjavur district who noted that a VAO is vested with many crucial roles for the implementation of schemes of the central and state governments for farmers, however due to negligence of duty and their non-availability/not residing in their jurisdictional villages, people especially farmers are forced to face several delays and issues.

The petition was heard on July 1, 2019 by Justice R. Suresh Kumar of Madurai bench of Madras High Court who directed the District Collector to form special cells to inquire the petitions received against VAOs.

The order further noted that VAOs absenting themselves should have  obtained prior permission from the concerned Tahsildar.
