Bird flu outbreak in Kerala: Nilgiris Collector orders ban on transporting eggs and meat from Kerala

The Nilgiris Collector, S P Amrith has ordered a ban on the transportation of eggs and meat to Ooty in the wake of 1,500 ducks dying due to the outbreak of bird flu in Kerala.

Nilgiris: Around 1,500 ducks died suddenly at a farm in Alappuzha, Kerala, three days ago. The ducks which were then tested have been confirmed to have died of bird flu. Following this, the State Government was instructed to destroy 25,000 infected chickens.

Owing to this, preventive measures were intensified in Tamil Nadu as well. A large number of tourists from various parts of Kerala visit Ooty via Gudalur, every day. The Nilgiris District Collector, S P Amrith has ordered precautionary measures to be taken in Nilgiris district to prevent the spread of bird flu.

Subsequently, a team consisting of a Veterinary Inspector and Animal Husbandry Assistants led by a Veterinary Assistant, along with the Police, Forest Department and Revenue Department, conducted bird flu prevention operations at all eight posts in Kakanallah, Nambiar Kunnu, Thannur, Soladi, Kakundi, Bulagunnu, Nadukhani and Patavayal in the Nilgiri district boundaries.

Considering that Wayanad district has a large number of poultry farms, a complete ban has been imposed on bringing meat or eggs into Tamil Nadu from there. All vehicles, including those of tourists coming from Kerala are inspected and allowed entry into Tamil Nadu only after disinfectant is sprayed on the tyres.

Nilgiris Collector S P Amrith has stated that there is a temporary order issued banning the movement of bird-related items from Kerala and Karnataka, till further orders. It is to be noted that the Central Government has sent a seven-member high-level team to study the bird flu outbreak.
