Plea to close spinning mill

A girl was found dead at the hostel on March 10

Tamil Nadu Textile and Common labour Union (TTCU), a women labour union, has called for the closure of the spinning mill at Vellakoil where a girl was recently found dead under suspicious circumstances inside women hostel on the mill premises.

TTCU members and family members of the girl told reporters here on Thursday that it was a clear case of sexual assault and murder and hence, action should be taken against the mill owners for not providing adequate security mandated in the law for women hostels. Sister of the deceased who too was working in the mill, said that the death came to light on March 10 morning.

“I was on night duty and a woman co-worker informed me that my sister was found dead in the floor of the hostel.

“Her dress was found disturbed, and the bangles broken.

“Efforts to strangulate her too was evident,” she said.

The police said that the case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

S. Thivyarakini, general secretary of TTCU, said the State Government should provide a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
