Sell green gram upon harvest, farmers told

Coimbatore, Mar 28 () As the prices of green gram hover around Rs 57 to Rs 60 per kg during harvest time of April-May, farmers have been advised by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural university (TNAU) to take appropriate decision to sell their produce. TNAU's Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre has analyzed 11 years prices that prevailed in Villupuram Regulated Market for green gram, and arrived at these prices, lower than the current prices in the state. It was anticipated that on the arrival of new crop, prices would decline, the study revealed. Major greengram producing states in the country are Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

In Tamil Nadu, greengram was cultivated in an area of 2.3 lakhs hectare with production of 1.83 lakh tonnes during 2014-15. Rice fallow pulses cultivation is a traditional practice followed in the delta region and major districts cultivating greengram are Nagapatinam, Thiruvarur, Thiruvallur, Thoothukudi and Salem, in the State. As per the Ministry of Agriculture, greengram was cultivated in an area of 3.4 million hectare with production of 1.39 million tonnes during 2014-15. India's consumption demand was 1.60 million tonnes during that period, necessitating an import of about 0.20 million tonnes, it added. NVM ROH VS
