Public hoist black flags at homes in protest against setting up of sewage treatment plant in Tirupur

The protest was held in the entire 45th Ward area, with the public warning that the protest will continue if the project is not stopped.

Tirupur: In protest against the setting up of a sewage treatment plant in Tirupur, the public hoisted black flags at their homes.

"Since further work is still going on, we staged a black flag protest in the entire 45th Ward area on Monday.

While the Mayor of the Corporation, the District Collector and the Municipal Commissioner have been stating that the project will not be implemented without the cooperation of the public, sewage treatment works are still going on, in the 45th Ward area. Our agitation will continue till the project is stopped," warned the public.

A meeting was held at a private marriage hall in Venkateswara Nagar area by the Anti-Sewage Treatment Plant Movement Federation in Tirupur.

The Tirupur Municipal Corporation had evacuated 130 families who had been residing in Quaid-e-Millat Nagar area under Ward No. 45 for many years on the grounds that the water body was in 'poramboke' land and that the area was not suitable for construction of houses.

At present, work is being carried out by the municipal administration to set up a sewage treatment plant at the site. While the people of the area and all political parties had opposed it, the District Collector's office had held discussions with the public and political parties of Ward No. 45.

The erstwhile Tirupur District Collector Vineeth had taken a wrong view of the Tamil Nadu Government that the public had supported the project and was carrying out the work of setting up a sewage treatment plant in the area.

While the opposition to the project continues in the area, he has also been insisting that the project site be shifted to another place since people will be affected if a sewage treatment plant is set up in the area, which has a population of over 30,000.
