In Sangam literature, songs of the heart are also modern songs - Poet Ilampirai's speech at Coimbatore Book Fair

Modernity means there is no rhetoric that has jumped from the sky. They bear the roots of tradition. It is modernity that carries innovations. Poet Ilapirai said that it was Mahakavi Bharathi who initiated this technique. He also said that it was he who initiated the modern verse poems.

Coimbatore: Poet Ilampirai has said that it was Mahakavi Bharathiyar who initiated the modern verse poem.

The "7th Book Fair – 2023", jointly organized by the Coimbatore District Administration, Codissia and The South Indian Book Publishers Association, is being held at the Codissia Commercial Complex on the Coimbatore-Avinashi Road.

In this situation, on the fifth day yesterday (25.07.2023) in a special programme titled "Modern Poetry and Music", The poet Ilampirai said, "What is modernity? In the early nineteenth century, all art forms underwent changes. New rays of light appeared in literature.

Modernity does not mean that something has jumped from the sky. They bear the roots of the tradition. It is modernity that carries innovations. It was Mahakavi Bharathi who initiated this technique. He initiated a modern verse poem. I am not opposed to tradition for that.

He paved the way for writing this too. He opened the new door. There are many poets who came through it. The greatest freedom was in modern poetry.

Modernity has to be viewed in terms of time and concept. In Sangam literature, I look upon internal songs as modern. If we are talking about Sangam literature even today, its extension continues to this day.

Modernity does not have to be confined to haiku poems and new poems. It can also be seen in folk songs. This is what she said.

Subsequently, film artist Ravi Subramaniam composed and sang for modern poetry. Codissia President V Thirugnanam, Coimbatore Book Fair President K Ramesh and writers, poets, readers and the general public participated in large numbers on the occasion.
