Coimbatore: The 77th Infantry Day was observed with a blend of traditional reverence and festivity at Wellington Military Station, marking the valorous sacrifices made by the Infantry soldiers in the 1947 conflict against Pakistani infiltrators in Jammu & Kashmir.

In a poignant ceremony, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, decorated with the Yudh Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal, along with the esteemed Lt Gen Devraj Anbu, a recipient of multiple distinguished medals and a retired Aide-de-Camp, paid tributes at the Madras Regimental War Memorial at Wellington. They laid wreaths in remembrance of the heroic infantrymen who laid down their lives defending the honor of the nation.

The occasion, celebrated annually on October 27, commemorates the gallant actions of an Infantry Company from the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment. In a significant historical moment, they were air-transported from Delhi to Srinagar in 1947, aimed at liberating Kashmir from the clutches of invader tribes backed by the Pakistan Army. This pivotal military decision followed the Instrument of Accession, signed by Maharaja Hari Singh, which officially integrated Jammu & Kashmir into India.

Highlighting the incredible dedication and the indomitable spirit of the infantrymen, Lt Gen Virendra Vats conveyed his heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging their immense contributions in safeguarding the nation’s borders under challenging conditions. He recognized the Infantry, often heralded as the "Queen of Battle," as the formidable backbone of the Indian Army, reflecting on the Infantry-centric operations in 1947 as a testament to their unyielding perseverance.

Adding an educational facet to the occasion, a special display of weapons and equipment was organized at the Srinagesh Barracks of the Madras Regimental Centre, aimed at engaging and informing students.
