Builders Expect Construction Activity to Revive soon

The Builders’ Association of India (BAI), Coimbatore centre, is hopeful of revival in the construction sector and growth of low cost housing here.

According to R. Karana Boopathy, the new chairman of the association, the city saw a slowdown in construction activity because of economic sluggishness.

The sector expects revival shortly as the government has announced several initiatives.

For instance, a subsidy of Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh is available to each beneficiary under affordable housing. There are housing projects in this segment in the fringe areas of the city. But, the availability is low compared to demand.

In the case of Smart City project, the association will create awareness among its members on the requirements of the government in the project.

Almost 30 per cent of construction workers here are from other States. Builders are encouraging workers to use safety gear such as helmets and safety belts to bring down accidents at construction sites, he said.

Some of the demands of the industry are the need to bring in e-tendering for State Government project, simplifying building plan approval process to avoid delay and reduction of taxes for the construction sector.

The office-bearers of the association for 2016-2017 are: R. Karana Boopathy (chairman), K. Rajavel (vice-chairman), V. Sivarajan (secretary) and K. Panneerselvam (treasurer).
