Coimbatore: Coimbatore is set to expand as the fourth largest municipal corporation in South India. The city, which already saw significant expansion in 2011, will now include new local bodies. Previously, the 2011 expansion incorporated three municipalities, seven town panchayats, and one village council, enlarging the corporation from 152 square kilometers to 254 square kilometers.

As a part of the ongoing urbanization in Tamil Nadu, similar to other districts like Chennai, Madurai, and Trichy, the city of Coimbatore is set to grow further. The areas being added to the corporation are notable for their potential to enhance the city's development.

The newly announced list of local bodies to be merged includes Vellamadai, Agraharasamakulam, Kondaiyampalayam, Sarkar Samakulam, Kalipalayam, Vellaanaipatti, Keeranatham, Kurudampalayam, Pannimadai, Neelambur, Irugur, Mayilampatti, Pattanam, Kalikkanaickenpalayam, Vedapatti, Somaaiyampalayam, Teetipalayam, Perur Chettipalayam, Malumichampatti, and Seerapalayam. This inclusion aims to foster more coordinated urban planning and improved municipal services across the expanded areas.
