Pollachi Municipality Seals 26 Buildings for Violating Government Regulations

Pollachi Municipality officials sealed 26 buildings in Mahalingapuram area for violating government regulations. The action follows a High Court order in response to a 2018 petition highlighting unauthorized constructions.

Coimbatore: In a significant move to enforce building regulations, the Pollachi Municipality has sealed 26 buildings in the Mahalingapuram area for violating government norms. This action comes in the wake of a Madras High Court order, responding to a petition filed in 2018 by a local resident, Krishnakumar.

The Mahalingapuram area in Pollachi is home to over a hundred residential and commercial buildings. Krishnakumar's petition alleged that many of these structures were operating without proper commercial use permits and were constructed in violation of building regulations.

Following the court's directive, Pollachi Municipality officials, led by in-charge Commissioner Senthilkumar, arrived at the location to seal the non-compliant establishments. However, their efforts were initially met with resistance from local shopkeepers and residents who surrounded the officials, leading to a tense situation.

The police were called in to manage the crowd, with over a hundred officers deployed to the scene. They intervened to disperse the protesting shop owners who were engaged in heated arguments with the municipal authorities. This brief confrontation caused a momentary commotion in the area.

While the court had originally ordered the sealing of 66 shops found to be in violation of regulations, 40 shop owners managed to obtain interim stay orders from the court. As a result, the municipal officials proceeded to seal the remaining 26 shops that were confirmed to be non-compliant.

This enforcement action underscores the municipality's commitment to ensuring adherence to building regulations and highlights the ongoing challenges in urban development and compliance in the region.
