New Telecom Act 2023: Penalties for Owning More Than 9 SIM Cards

The Indian Telecom Act 2023 imposes strict penalties on individuals possessing more than 9 SIM cards. Violators may face fines up to ₹2 lakh or imprisonment.

Coimbatore: The Indian Telecom Act 2023 has introduced stringent regulations on SIM card ownership, catching many mobile users off guard. According to the new law, individuals are now prohibited from possessing more than 9 SIM cards, with severe penalties for those who violate this rule.

Under the Act, anyone found using more than 9 SIM cards could face a hefty fine of up to ₹2 lakh or even imprisonment. This move aims to curb fraudulent activities and enhance security measures in the telecom sector.

For those concerned about the number of SIM cards registered under their name, the Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP) website offers a solution. Users can register their mobile numbers on the TAFCOP portal to verify the number of SIM cards linked to their name. This platform also allows individuals to deactivate or continue using the registered numbers as per their preference.

The implementation of this new regulation highlights the government's efforts to streamline telecom services and prevent misuse of multiple SIM cards. Mobile users are advised to check their SIM card ownership status and take necessary actions to comply with the new guidelines to avoid potential legal consequences.
