Gold Worth Rs 63 Lakh Seized at Coimbatore Airport

Revenue Intelligence officials seized 854 grams of gold valued at Rs 63.24 lakh from a passenger arriving from Singapore at Coimbatore International Airport on July 24.

Coimbatore: In a significant bust, Revenue Intelligence officials seized gold worth Rs 63.24 lakh at the Coimbatore International Airport on July 24. The operation was carried out following reports of gold smuggling on flights arriving from foreign countries to Coimbatore.

Acting on the tip-off, Revenue Intelligence officers conducted a thorough inspection at the airport. During the check, they searched the belongings of a passenger who had arrived on a flight from Singapore. The search revealed four gold biscuits and gold jewellery hidden in the passenger's bag, weighing a total of 854 grams and valued at approximately Rs 63.24 lakh.

The passenger has been detained for questioning by the Revenue Intelligence officials. Preliminary investigations suggest that the jewellery was brought into the country without paying the appropriate taxes.

Revenue Intelligence officials have reiterated that it is illegal to bring gold and other valuable items from foreign countries without proper declaration and payment of applicable taxes. They warned that such attempts at tax evasion would be dealt with strictly under the law.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of gold smuggling faced by customs and revenue authorities at international airports. The officials remain vigilant to prevent such illegal activities and ensure compliance with import regulations.
