27 Nominations Filed in Single Day as Coimbatore Gears Up for Assembly Elections

A total of 27 nominations were filed in Coimbatore district yesterday, bringing the total to 42 candidates across 10 constituencies. TVK and independent candidates dominated yesterday's filings, while major party candidates are yet to submit their nominations amid heavy police security.

Coimbatore: The election season in Coimbatore district gained momentum yesterday as 27 nominations were filed in a single day at the District Collector's office, bringing the total number of candidates to 42 across the district's 10 assembly constituencies.

In an interesting development, only TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) and independent candidates filed their nominations yesterday, while major party candidates from DMK and AIADMK are yet to submit their papers. The district is witnessing a direct contest between DMK and AIADMK in six constituencies, indicating a bipolar political landscape in these seats.

However, two constituencies—Mettupalayam and Valparai—have not received any nominations yet, raising questions about candidate preparedness in these areas. Election officials confirmed that the nomination process is still ongoing, with the last date for filing fast approaching.

The Coimbatore South office, where nominations are being received, has been fortified with heavy police security to ensure smooth and peaceful proceedings. In a modern approach to security and transparency, police personnel deployed at the venue have been equipped with body cameras to record all activities and maintain accountability.

With 42 candidates already in the fray and major party nominees yet to file, the number is expected to rise significantly in the coming days. Political observers note that the delay in filing by prominent party candidates could be a strategic move, typically done closer to the deadline to avoid prolonged campaigning expenses and scrutiny.

The election authorities have urged all prospective candidates to file their nominations well before the deadline to avoid last-minute complications and allow sufficient time for scrutiny of papers.
