Three Prisoners Assault Guard at Coimbatore Central Jail - Case Registered

Three prisoners including Anandh and Jayamani assaulted prison guard Vellaipandi at Coimbatore Central Jail after he prevented them from eavesdropping on a lawyer-client conversation. The injured guard was admitted to Government Hospital and a case has been registered against the three prisoners.

Coimbatore: Over 2,500 prisoners are currently lodged at Coimbatore Central Jail. Convicted prisoners and under-trial prisoners are housed in separate blocks. An incident that occurred at the prison yesterday has caused significant uproar.

Yesterday, three prisoners including Anandh and Jayamani were standing in the Block 29 area. At that time, another prisoner was speaking with his lawyer. The three prisoners were standing nearby, apparently eavesdropping on their conversation.

Prison guard Vellaipandi noticed this and instructed the three prisoners to move away from that area. Angered by this, Jayamani, Anandh and the others reportedly abused and disrespected the guard verbally.

The guard filed a complaint about this with Prison Supervisor Thamaraikani. Following this, the supervisor came and conducted an inquiry. This further enraged the three prisoners who collectively attacked guard Vellaipandi.

Guard Vellaipandi was severely injured in this assault. Other guards immediately rushed to the scene and rescued him. They also removed the attacking prisoners from the area. The injured guard Vellaipandi was admitted to Coimbatore Government Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

This incident has created major commotion at Coimbatore Central Jail. A complaint has been filed at Racecourse Police Station against the three prisoners. Based on this, a case has been registered against them. Prison authorities are taking steps to transfer the three prisoners to another jail.

Prison officials stated, "Protecting private conversations between prisoners and their lawyers is very important. Eavesdropping is a prohibited act. The guard was performing his duty correctly. However, the assault on him by the prisoners is condemnable."

A few days ago, an incident occurred where other prisoners assaulted a person arrested in the Sulur minor rape case. Before that, an incident of a guard being attacked with a tin container also took place.

The current incident marks the third attack on prison guards. The increase in violent incidents by prisoners at Coimbatore Central Jail over the past few months is concerning.

Prison officials have stated: "Strict measures will be taken to prevent prisoner attacks at Coimbatore Jail. The number of surveillance cameras will be increased. Additional measures will be implemented for guard safety. Prisoners involved in violence will definitely be punished."

Officials have assured that the prison administration is taking all necessary measures to monitor prisoner behavior and prevent violent incidents.
