The Coimbatore City Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling 21 kg of ganja in an ambulance on the Ukkadam–Valankulam Flyover Road. The ambulance used to transport the contraband was also seized.

Coimbatore: The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the Coimbatore City Police arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling 21 kg of ganja in an ambulance and seized the vehicle used for transporting the contraband.

The accused have been identified as Manikandan (28) of Peelamedu, Coimbatore, and Veerachinnamaruthu (28), an ambulance driver from Kattikulam in Sivagangai district. Police registered a case under Sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(C) and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Acting on specific information, PEW personnel intercepted a Tata Winger ambulance on the Ukkadam–Valankulam Flyover Road on Saturday. During the search, police recovered approximately 21 kg of ganja concealed inside the vehicle.

According to the police, the accused allegedly believed that transporting ganja in an ambulance would allow them to avoid routine police inspections and toll plaza checks, enabling them to move the contraband without raising suspicion.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the duo had allegedly procured the ganja from Ichchapuram in Andhra Pradesh with the intention of selling it in Coimbatore for huge profits.

Both accused were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Police said further investigation is under way to ascertain whether the accused had previously smuggled ganja using similar methods and to identify others involved in the distribution network.

The seized ganja and the ambulance used for the transportation of the narcotics have been taken into police custody.
