A 39-year-old lorry driver was allegedly beaten to death with a wooden stick by his neighbour following an altercation in Sellakkaraisal, near Sulur in Coimbatore district. Police have secured the accused, whose reported history of mental illness is being verified as part of the investigation.
Coimbatore: A 39-year-old lorry driver was allegedly beaten to death with a wooden stick by his neighbour following an altercation at Gandhi Nagar in Sellakkaraisal, under the Sultanpet police limits, on Wednesday evening.
The deceased, Senthilkumar, was returning home on a two-wheeler with his friend Santhosh at around 4 p.m. after having tea at a nearby bakery.
According to the police, on reaching his residence, Senthilkumar noticed his neighbour Kannan (35) shouting loudly. When he questioned Kannan about the noise, an argument reportedly ensued between the two.
During the altercation, Kannan allegedly struck Senthilkumar with a wooden stick behind his left ear. Senthilkumar sustained a severe injury, collapsed and became unconscious.
On being alerted, 108 ambulance personnel reached the spot and examined Senthilkumar. However, he was declared dead at the scene.
Sultanpet police secured Kannan and brought him to the police station for enquiry. The body was subsequently sent to the Government ESI Medical College Hospital in Singanallur, Coimbatore, for post-mortem examination.
Inspector Gandhimathy of the Sultanpet Police Station is conducting the investigation. Police said information regarding Kannan’s reported history of mental illness was being verified as part of the probe. Further investigation is underway.
