Electronic Voting Machine awareness programme held at Singanallur bus stand

With the objective of creating awareness on the use of electronic voting machines among voters, Coimbatore Corporation officials along with poll officials in the Singanallur Assembly constituency placed model EVMs at the Singanallur bus stand on Sunday morning.

Corporation officials said that they placed two EVMs attached to as many control units for the members of the public to see, operate, and also pose questions.

From 8 a.m. to around 11 a.m., the officials said that they had had around 200 persons including commuters, bus drivers and conductors stopped to clear their doubts.

The drivers wanted to know if the wiring could be changed in the EVMS in such a way that all votes recorded in the machine would go to a particular party. They were also curious to know what would happen if the voters pressed buttons against which no candidates name was displayed.

The officials said that they asked those who posed to questions to operate the machines to clear their doubts. And then they demonstrated how the EVMs or control units could not be tampered with.

They also explained how more votes could not be polled by simply pressing the buttons.

Earlier on Saturday, the poll officials in the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency staged a voter awareness programme by way of a dance programme at the Brookefields Mall. Election observer for awareness programme Suba Gupta was also present to witness the event.
