Coimbatore Man Protests By Chanting Slokas and Standing On One Foot For Five Hours

A 63-year-old man chanted slokas for five hours by standing on one foot to protest against the move to demolish three temples at Gandhipuram.

The district administration has decided to relocate three temples in the area to construct a flyover on the Cross Cut Road. A land near Kattoor was finalised for relocating the temples. But the managements of the temples allegedly delayed the process of land selection. Meanwhile, flyover construction continued.

The man, identified as Durai Balan, began the protest programme at the Siddhi Vinayak temple - one of the temples that the district administration plans to demolish - at 7am and continued to chant slokas till noon standing on one foot. Balan said he was performing 'Arjuna Tapam.'

"I hope the officials take note and do not relocate these temples," he said.

This is the second time he was protesting this way. He did this last year when the construction of the flyover began and the demolition idea was proposed.

He said he would stage similar protests twice a week until his demands are heard.
