Banks on TamilNadu border asked to shift valuables

Following Maoist threats along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, the Coimbatore rural police has requested banks located in border areas to shift their valuables including cash and gold to vaults at their main branches to ensure their safe-keeping.

The rural police also installed three more checkposts at Anaikatti, Mulli and Patti Salai near Karunya Nagar to prevent Maoists' entries. They have also been conducting combing operations along with the special task force (STF).

Coimbatore district has 262 tribal settlements. Following the Maoist attacks in Agali and Mukkali in Palakkad district, the Tamil Nadu Q branch identified 71 tribal villages located near the Tamil Nadu - Kerala border areas in Coimbatore district and requested the district administration and rural police to implement the government schemes pertaining to basic amenities like issuing community certificates and ration cards.

The 71 settlements identified are scattered in five taluks, Perur, Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Valparai and Coimbatore North.

"We have been frequently visiting tribal settlements and interacting with the tribes. They were asked to inform us if they see any suspicious people roaming the tribal settlements. We have installed three new check posts in the border areas and intensified vehicle checks also," said RV Ramya Bharati, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district.

Banks located along the Kerala -Tamil Nadu border were asked to shift their valuables to vaults of their main branches. "Many banks in border areas have started shifting their valuables to their main branches. We are monitoring banks and ATMs," said Ramya Bharati.
