Arresting people for discussing about CM is Infringement of rights, PUCL claims

The All India Lawyers association and People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) have condemned the recent arrest of two bank employees for speaking about the Chief Minister (CM) Jayalalithaa’s health. They have alleged that this is an infringement of the freedom of speech. An arrest made for discussing between themselves is against liberty, they said.

Suresh and Ramesh who are employees of the Canara Bank, Thondamuthur branch were arrested yesterday for speaking news about CM's health condition. A complaint in this regard has been registered by the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) along with the All India Lawyers Association with the Superintendent of Police.

When speaking to the press, Balamurugan, member of PUCL said “Arresting the two persons for speaking about the CMs health is an infringement of freedom of speech. This entire incident makes us want to believe if the police is actually functioning to gratify the ruling party that is in power.” said Balamurugan .

He added that the Superintendent of Police of the city should conduct an inquiry and determine the factual reason for the arrests. The complainants also demanded to release Ramesh and Suresh from the case and to initiate an enquiry regarding these arrests.
