The Symphony restaurant at the Grand Regent reflects the owners passion for the performing arts. Traditional instruments fitted in niches on the wall .Bright colourful lights are used for illumination. Multiple tables consist of heavy wooden and upholstered seating to ensure the diner’s comfort at this multi –cuisine restaurant.

The Grand Regent is located on one of the arterial roads leading into the city. The easy accessibility and decades of dedicated service have greatly contributed to it’s staying power. At Symphony, emphasis is placed on taste.

The lunch buffet offers a wide variety of dishes comprising of Indian, Chinese and Continental. There’s something on the menu to satisfy most palates. The food is unpretentious, tasty and follows a popular menu.

Wholesome dishes like chicken biriyani, Indian flat breads, paneer and mutton gravies, fried rice, noodles, stir fries, poriyal, rasam, kozhambhu, curd rice, pickle and papad are standard fare. The additions or specials each day may vary with regard to the soup, salad, a few side dishes and desserts.

The General Manager of the hotel Mr.Ramesh Chandrakumar ensures that the ingredients are sourced fresh every day. Meat, chicken and sea food is purchased daily in the right quantities so that nothing is frozen. The prawn masala was served in a dark coating of spices which was absolutely delicious. The spices had the right balance of heat and flavour and were not in the least overpowering. The sweetness of the jumbo prawns came through with every bite. The mutton fry was equally tasty, except for large pieces of bone which made it slightly hard to handle. The lightly fried tava fish and the fish gravy were also on point with the flavours.

The naan and roti is served to the table on request. It is light, flaky and perfect to dunk into the gravy of choice.

A lot of regulars frequent this restaurant for the chicken biriyani. The consistency in taste is what makes this a crowd pleaser. The restaurant also has an extensive a la carte menu .

Do ask for their variety of dosai fillings if you enjoy a dosai dinner. Chicken mince, mutton mince, egg, podi, masala are the tried and tested fillings which they offer on request.

The vegetarian food also does not disappoint. Whether a simple native vegetable or a baby corn fry, the dish is cooked to please the customer. A large helping of curd rice is placed at one end of the buffet. When eating this dish in the South of India, it must conform to certain specifications. The curd must have the right consistency, not too watery and above all be free from any hint of sourness. When mixed with the soft, cooked grains of rice, it should have a creamy mouth feel and yet retain a bit of texture. That’s exactly how it was served at the symphony restaurant. The pickle accompaniments further enhanced the taste.

We must take pride in doing our traditional dishes right. A multi-cuisine restaurant in a particular region must strive to first perfect the regional cuisine, right down to the most humble dish. One can argue that it can be eaten at home. While that may be true, what about the visitor looking to taste authentic Tamil fare ? We are in the heart of TamilNadu after all. The dish gets a pretty quotient with a garnish of pomegranate seeds, which adds a pop of sweetness to this cool savoury dish.

The staff are well attired, courteous and appropriately groomed. They are helpful without being intrusive and this allows the customers to enjoy their meal without unnecessary interruptions.

The dessert counter on the opposite end of the main table has a whole range of sweet dishes both Indian as well as Western. Payasam, halwa, gulab jamun vie for attention against the cakes, puddings and ice creams.

There has not been a single occasion when me or any of my fellow diners have not enjoyed a hearty meal at this restaurant. At the end of the day, when we venture to eat out, tasty, well prepared and hygienically served food is what we all like to spend our time and money on. The Symphony at The Grand Regent is certainly worth your while.
