BizCity: Management is all about numbers & alphabets

As the world becomes more Complex and Globalisation engulfs us with different cultures, its better management is understood in simplistic terms. This article is an attempt to imbibe the principles of management through numbers and alphabets.

0. The Power of Zero:

Many may be surprised if we say Zero is all pervasive. While as children, we have been taught everything negative about Zero, as professionals our records soar high based on number of Zeros to our credit - Zero Failures, Zero Inventory, Zero Rejections, Zero Based Budgeting, to name a few.

Having understood the importance of “0”, this is probably why even educational institutions have migrated to grades “0” meaning Outstanding. This is true in all sense!

1. The Single Most Important Factor:

Today in this world everything can be bought. If the project is worth, even money is easily available. One important asset that is elusive is People - the single most important factor in our success. Importance of people, both in social and business set up cannot be over emphasised. Successful leaders, in families and in businesses have realised this and have embraced people whole heartedly.

2. Two Significant Elements of Humans & Business:

Aspirations galore for any human and more so, for business professionals. However, emphasis is on fairness in achieving them. What drives Humans towards excellence is Growth & Profitability. Growth need not be in monetary terms alone, it is all encompassing - knowledge, social status, recognition, etc.. Similarly, profitability mostly is understood only in rupee terms. In reality it simply means the value it brings in for the efforts put in - can be knowledge, status, standard of living, etc..

3. The Three Facets:

While defining parameters for success, mostly people talk about intelligence. Though it’s important, intelligence alone rarely delivers success. It’s the base on which the following facets are built on: Knowledge Quotient, Physical Fitness, and Emotional Stability.

This is important both for individuals and organisations. They are all independent and inter-dependent. To sustain success, all three facets are essential.

4. The Quartets - 4Cs:

We continue to play a part in exploiting what nature and our fore-fathers have left us with. We aspire to sustain our growth - both socially & professionally. For our own good, we need to show enough Care and Concern for the environment and stake holders of the society. This can happen only when we are willing to Co-operate with all concerned and effectively Communicate within the team, importance of such initiatives.

5. The I’s Factor - 5Is:

Successful professionals always keep their eyes and ears open to the eco-system, irrespective of magnitude of impact. Good management starts with open Interaction with the eco-system. This helps all required Information to flow smoothly for easy decision making. While timely decisions are important to be made at all times, continuous reviews of such decisions for effectiveness and for further Improvisation is required.

Japanese ways of working is always a fascination. Its they who taught the World that there is nothing like ultimate in life and everything that is there is to be improved for tomorrow, including humans. This they have done by imbibing Interrogative qualities across spectrum of the society. Once “Why” is asked for any process at-least five times, next obvious stage is Innovation. Innovation does not necessarily mean leap frog innovation, though it is aspired for. A successful, innovative person looks at every opportunity as possible opportunity for innovation and hence incremental innovation is what will be sustainable.

To conclude, personal and professional lives are two sides of the same coin. Eventual success always depends on the end result - Personal Productivity & Professional Profitability. Given the tight schedules current generation is exposed, its important both personal & professional processes are viewed from the Value-add perspective.
