Coimbatore: A man who attempted to escape the police by jumping into the Bhavani River after a stabbing incident in Mettupalayam has been caught after breaking his leg in the process.

The incident unfolded when Sasi (38), a painter from Darlington area in Kotagiri, Nilgiris district, came to Mettupalayam with his friends Mohamed Usen Ali and Sudhakar on his motorcycle. Near the Karuppurayan temple on the Mettupalayam-Kotagiri road, their motorcycle's clutch wire snapped. Three young men on another motorcycle helped tow their vehicle to Mettupalayam.

Upon reaching Ooty Road, the helpers demanded money for alcohol, leading to an argument. When Sasi refused to pay, the young men threatened him and attempted to seize his motorcycle. The situation escalated when one of them, identified as Surya, stabbed Sasi with a concealed knife before fleeing the scene.

Mettupalayam police were alerted, and they rushed Sasi to the government hospital in Mettupalayam before transferring him to Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment. Based on Sasi's complaint, the police arrested two suspects, Aravindan and Nisar, while searching for the main accused, Surya (21).

Today, when the police tried to apprehend Surya near the Mettupalayam river bridge, he attempted to escape by jumping from the bridge into the Bhavani River. However, he broke his leg in the process and is currently undergoing treatment at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital.
