Water Release from Thirumoorthy Dam to Poosari Nayakkan Lake near Udumalai After Two Years Brings Joy to Farmers

After a two-year hiatus, water from Thirumoorthy Dam was released to Poosari Nayakkan Lake near Udumalaipettai, Tirupur district. The release will benefit irrigation and drinking water needs for several villages.

Tirupur: In a significant development for the agricultural community near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district, water was released from the Thirumoorthy Dam to the Poosari Nayakkan Lake after a gap of two years. This move has brought immense joy to farmers and residents of the area who have been facing water scarcity.

The Poosari Nayakkan Lake, located in Alampalayam near Udumalaipettai, serves as a crucial water source for irrigating over 75 acres of farmland and provides drinking water to several villages in the vicinity. However, for the past two years, various factors had prevented the release of water from Thirumoorthy Dam to this lake, leading to irrigation challenges, drinking water shortages, and difficulties for livestock.

Responding to persistent demands from farmers and the public, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister issued orders to release water from Thirumoorthy Dam to Poosari Nayakkan Lake. The state government has permitted the release of up to 20 million cubic feet of water, taking into account the current water levels and inflow to the dam. This water release is scheduled from today until the 13th of this month, primarily to meet the drinking water needs of the public and livestock.

Following the government's decision, water was released from Thirumoorthy Dam to Poosari Nayakkan Lake today. The event was marked by a ceremony where farmers and local residents, led by Pollachi MP Eswaran Swamy, offered floral tributes to the released water.

Speaking to reporters, MP Eswaran Swamy said, "This water release fulfills a long-standing demand of the local farmers. It has been made possible through the efforts of Minister Saminathan, planning committee heads, and agricultural associations. This action proves that the current government is truly farmer-friendly. On behalf of the farmers and public, I express gratitude to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for issuing the order to release water."

The water release event was attended by Public Works Department Assistant Executive Engineer Vijayasekharan, Udumalaipettai East Union Secretary Thangaraj, Poosari Nayakkan Lake Irrigation Board administrators Kalimuthu and Modern Mahaalingam, along with over 100 farmers.

This development is expected to provide much-needed relief to the agricultural community in the region, supporting both irrigation and drinking water needs.
