Heavy Rains in Valparai Leads to School Holidays, Raises River Levels

Due to heavy rainfall in the Valparai area, Coimbatore District Collector has announced a holiday for local schools. River levels at Koolangal and Nadumalai have surged.

Coimbatore: Continuous heavy rainfall in the Valparai region and its surrounding estates including Karumalai, Akkamalai, Vellamalai, Chinna Kallar, Neerar, Sinkona, Sirukundra, Sholayar, Urulikals, Panni Medu, and Villoni has led to significant disruptions. Several areas such as Valparai Cooperative Colony, Thulasinga Nagar, Kamarajar Nagar, and Anna Nagar experienced an all-night power outage due to the storm.

As the heavy rains poured throughout the night, the river levels at Koolangal and Nadumalai experienced a sharp rise, prompting local authorities to issue warnings against swimming or approaching the rivers. In response, Vasudevan, the Valparai Tahsildar, and Police Inspector Anandakumar have inspected the regions along Koolangal River, reinforcing the prohibition for tourists and residents alike.

In light of the continuing downpour, Coimbatore District Collector has announced a holiday for schools in the affected regions to ensure the safety of students. The incessant rainfall has notably affected the normal life of residents in Valparai and its vicinity.

Rainfall measurements have recorded significant levels in the area: Valparai received 107 mm, while Chinna Kallar recorded the highest with 198 mm. Other areas like Sinkona and Sholayar noted 147 mm and 122 mm respectively, adding to concerns over potential flooding and safety hazards in these regions.
