Candlelight vigil seeking justice for Jisha

Hundreds of men, women and girls took out a march around Race Course on Sunday evening in the “Justice for Jisha” tribute to Kerala rape victim Jisha.

The law student was raped and murdered by two men on April 28.

The participants wanted Jisha to be the last victim of such crimes against women. Most of the participants were dressed in black and white to mourn her death.

Some passers-by too participated in the silent procession that started and concluded at C.S.I. All Souls’ Church.

Founder of VER Foundation, which co-ordinated the event, T. Vasanth said that the government should put an end to crimes such as sexual harassment of women and child abuse by taking severe action against the guilty.

S. Hemalakshmi, a school teacher who participated, said that parents had an important role in shaping children and ensure that they did not indulge in such brutal acts against girls and women.

According to her, maximum punishment should be awarded to persons who committed such crimes.

Students from various colleges in and around the city took part in a one-day fast organised by the Indian Foundation on the premises of a private college near Nava India Arch in Avinashi Road on Sunday.

The students raised slogans seeking justice for Jisha and demanded maximum punishment for rapists.

They also paid a floral tribute to the victim.
