World peace day 2016 - Goals, quotes and hip-hop

The International Day of Peace was observed yesterday, 21 September, around the world by all the 193 Member States of the United Nations. The theme that was chosen for the year 2016 was "The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Building Blocks for Peace".

It was in the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit held during September 2015, a resolution on SDGs was passed. The agenda popularly called as "The future we want" and officially known as "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development", carries a set of 17 "Global Goals", with 169 targets.

1. No Poverty

2. Zero Hunger

3. Good Health and Well-being

4. Quality Education

5. Gender Equality

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

17. Partnerships for the Goals

While the goals on the outset may appear common, they are expected to be achieved through sustainable means. What's appreciable is the widening ambit of peace. It's no longer just peace among nations or between its people, the peace one should strive for should also encompass the environment.

The sustainable development goals, which carry as many as 169 proposed targets and 304 proposed indicators, show how we must live in peace with our environment. The fact that it has been adopted by 193 countries of the United Nations General Assembly is itself an indicator of the stark reality of climate change and why these goals can no longer be seen as mere reforms on the paper, but needs to be seen as essential steps to sustain the conditions for survival on the planet. The popular quote by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, sums it all: "there can be no Plan B, because there is no Planet B."

On the occasion of International Day of Peace 2016 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said:

"Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind." He further added: “The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and the people...they are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success.”
