Being a mother is a round the clock job, from bring up the kids, to feeding their demands, from accomplishing household chores to suddenly realising that you are also the bread winner of the house.
Yes, our story is based on every single mother who has gone an edge above, an effort superfluous to bring up her kids in a manner that nothing is compromised.
Penned down is a heart connecting story of a Bangalore based artist, Pramila Jain.
“I lost my husband when my kid was just two year old, he died in an accident and since then I have been bringing up my kid single handed. I came from a very orthodox family as soon as I became a widow the people around me changed the colours of life, from bright colours to dreary tones, my life came to a halt just like these colors.
My little kid would ask me often, when her daddy would come home, and I would have nothing to say. I saw her getting pulled back, depressed and dull but I don’t blame her, because I, myself was like that. I couldn’t help the situation because I was dependant on my in laws financially till I felt this was just not right for my child’s future.
I decided to take a bolder step; I knew I had much more in me than just making rotis and nurturing my kid. I decided to revolt and become the sari cladded woman with pants on. I decided to earn my own living.
I sold my wedding jewellery, and bought a small house of my own. I moved out of in laws house, though on good terms and set up my business.
I started doing stain glass and Tanjore paintings. My first orders were from my peer circle which later expanded to large scale orders from corporate companies and other firms. Initially I went through a lot of hardships, my daughter was small, and she was just five when I decided to do this on my own. I had lot of things in mind, I had to give her time, take care of her demands, her health, be a part of her activities and yet earn.
So during her school hours I would sit and paint, coordinate with my clients and meet their demands and before she could come home I would wind up all. And at night when she is sleeping I would spend time calculating my financials and simultaneously planning for next day’s meal and pre-preparing it.
I know she misses her father a lot but I know she is super proud of me today.”
She was one of the mothers who make us realise that single motherhood is undoubtedly challenging but it’s your child and her future again that gives you the spirit to fight all odds and go on undefeated.
