K.Vijaykumar IPS has had a chequered career. He drew inspiration from F.V.Arul, Rustomji and of course his father Krishnan Nair who had served the Police force from Coimbatore. Therefore it became a natural call for him and he took part in the civil services exam, got the required position which was sufficient to become an IPS officer, however he worked hard to clear the exams in order to make himself eligible to become an IAS officer! The competitive spirit was evident in him even during his early days. Later on Vijaykumar IPS served in a number of places and positions for years. He was the SP at Salem, he was the Chennai Commissioner during the Ayodhya Kuppam Veeramani shoot out, he was part of the commando unit that took care of Rajiv Gandhi during his tenure as Prime Minister, he once headed the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy at Hyderabad and served as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force among many others. He is very familiar with Coimbatore and he likes the city. Vijaykumar visits Coimbatore often in order to meet his mother Kausalya. His brother in law K.V.Mohan Menon is a well known entrepreneur in town.
The dynamic officer underwent rigourous training under Rossie in Europe and this toughened him even further. Vijaykumar is a highly qualified person and is known for his deep study of every aspect concerned with his career and life. He had served the Late Chief Minister as the head of her security apparatus for some years and his tenure with the Special Task Force (STF) that put an end to the Veerappan menace is part of history. Now he is an advisor to the Union Government at Delhi. Post retirement Vijaykumar has shared his experiences with regard to parts of his life, career and all about the Forest Brigand Veerappan in the form of a book that was published by Rupa recently. The service oriented Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis hosted the launch of this book at Coimbatore on Saturday, the 20th of May 2017 at the Chamber Hall on Avinashi Road. The guests were treated with nice Chai and samosas before they got to taste the flavour of the wonderful evening.

The evening began with the "Tamil Thai Vazhthu" by the singing Rotarian Gurdeep Singh Anand and his rendition was worth emulating. The welcome address was by Jaykumar Ramdas the President of the club and Jayakumar of IAB introduced K.Vijaykumar to the audience. The President of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar spoke about the book and Vijaykumar in a befitting manner. His review included read outs from the book while he also humourously conveyed facts about the support of Vijaykumar's wife Meena throughout his career. He spoke at length about the four parts of the book - The Making of a Cop, The Veerappan Files, The Rajkumar Saga and its fall out and finally Operation Cocoon which concluded the Veerappan menace on the 18th of October 2004. Vanavarayar made a special mention of the astrologer who had made predictions with regard to Veerappan and thereby recognised his presence. He appreciated the fast paced book while complimenting Vijaykumar for his looks and suggested that he do a movie with S.S.Rajamouli immediately! Vanavarayar accoladed Meena Vijaykumar for having brought up the kids Arjun and Ashwini in a marvellous manner.
Vijaykumar for his part acknowledged the role of Sanjay Bidari, Walter Devaram and many others who had helped bring down the size of Veerappan's gang from three to two digits over the years. He was appreciative of the supportive and non interfering role of Late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa during his tenure at the STF and has accordingly dedicated this book to her. Vijaykumar spoke about the advice received from an official and therefore he lured Veerappan out of Karnataka finally in order to put an end to the menace. He spoke about the supportive role of Bannari Amman Sugars S.V.Balasubramaniam with regard to hosting the STF. Vijaykumar took care to talk about the support and inputs given by several officials belonging to all ranks and the support that was received from the people. Subsequently a number of questions were posed to Vijaykumar and one among the audience wondered why so much money was spent one forest brigand for about twenty years. Vijaykumar concluded by stating that extreme tendencies which happen to be the root cause for violence should be nipped at the bud. He further stated that many such people appear to be like do gooders but they are not. Veerappan himself had been responsible for the death of 44 cops and foresters plus over 80 civilians .Besides he was a poacher and sandal wood smuggler. His strong mood swings and cruel approach were known to cause enormous harm and therefore he had to be captured or weeded out in the process. While taking a question on astrology, he stated that the positive inputs could be used for they encourage everyone concerned. He had got his head tonsured after the success of Operation Cocoon at the Bannari Amman Temple in Sathyamangalam. Vijaykumar autographed a number of books during the later part of the evening.
The Chief Guest D.R.Karthikeyan graced the occasion and he showered encomiums on Vijaykumar. Its a known fact that he was the Director of CBI and had helped nab the assassins of the Late Prime Miniter Rajiv Gandhi those days. Coimbatore is truly blessed to have had such decorated officers who have served the country. Thanks to these gentlemen, today we have the CRPF and RAF (Rapid Action Force) stations in town. Finally the National Anthem was rendered after the vote of thanks by Rotarian Chugh. Its earnestly hoped that both D.R.Karthikeyan and K.Vijaykumar pen down their auto biographies as suggested by Dr.B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar.
