When was the last time you went for a play that was made in Coimbatore. There are lot of plays that happen in Coimbatore but it’s mostly by artists from across the country. The city has always appreciated art and culture, but the artists from the city go mostly unrecognised because the support of the audience is very low, they relocate themselves to metro cities like Bangalore and Chennai to experience better exposure and applaud.
But there is one troupe that has decided to strive their way to bring a change in the city and its audience by exploring and harnessing talented artists of Coimbatore who usually go unrecognized or relocate - Udalveli.
Udal (body) Veli (space) started in the year 2016 by Dharani Dharan and few other artists, is an initiative to promote live performing arts and performances. It enhances to revive the audience culture.
Its latest work, Kaathiruthal is a dance confluence of various forms existing in India to express the feeling of longing. A longing not just associated with love but a form of longing that can be reflected in everything, right from a mother waiting to deliver a child, or a father waiting for his son to come back home.
“The artists performing in this dance confluence are from Coimbatore, Chennai and Bangalore. We would express our concept of longing inspired from the tamil Sangam Poetry, through 5 different dance forms.” As expressed by Dharani Dharan.
Theatre according to Dharani Dharan is the most powerful way to connect with the audience, the expression says a lot, it can stir more than motion cinema.
Every dance form staged to to performed in Kaathiruthal, reflects a single message of longing, from kathak to contemporary dance form, from Rajasthan dance to Bharatnathyam every artist yearns to convey the pain, the joy, the desire and reason of various longings.
Through this art showcase the troupe intends to introduce another classical Fusion dance group Raga, from Coimbatore.
